Top 5 CARDIO GAMES by TMT Systems

Ready to RUN?!!

Have you been on the rat wheel for so long you just simply dread cardio?
Hopefully you are using cardio to supplement your strength training, but it is still important to keep your heart and lungs in condition no matter what your goal.
As I start prepping for photo shoots I have to up my cardio once again.
Of course, having a good music playlist is paramount to getting a good session in!
Take the time to download some new tracks!

Here are a few "GAMES" to keep your cardio interesting.

#5 - INTERVALS (Speed + Incline)

1 Min ON (Ramping up from 7-12)
1 Min OFF
Repeat for 1 mile then turn the incline all the way up.
30 SECONDS ON (Ramping up from 7-10)
1-2 Min OFF
Sprinting on that incline is brutal and can be dangerous if you aren't used to this type of intensity.
I reserve this format for my athletes.

#4 - MIX IT UP

Get off the treadmill …
and try some of the other forms of cardio in your local gym.

My gym has a row machine, a heavy bag and some battle ropes.
One of my favorite tests for my clients to gauge their progress is 1000 Meters on the Row Machine for as fast as possible. This can be accomplished usually in the 3-6 minutes range so this is a great start.
Then I like to move on to some 1:00 Rope Drills.
1 Min ON / 30 Seconds OFF doing various rope exercises such as:
Single Arm Waves, Double Arm Slams, Jump Squat Slams, and Seated Twist Slams.
Do another 10 minutes here then move on to the Heavy Bag.
Here, try for 3 Minutes ON / 1 Minute OFF of various forms of combos such as:
Jab, Jab, Hook (1, 1, 2)
Jab, Hard Hook  (1, 2)
Jab, Hook, Body Shot L, Body Shot R (1, 2, 3, 4)
Body Shot L, Body Shot R (3, 4, 3, 4)

#3 - STAIRMASTER SPRINTS

Put the stair master on MAX and run for 1 minute
ride it down to the bottom and either let your buddy go next or rest for 1 minute
REPEAT 10-15 times :)
Sweat!!!!!
(Stairmaster Sprints are at the end of this video)

#2 - BIG BEN CHALLENGE

This is one that I have yet to master. A past roommate of mine, Ben Neal showed me where I stood one day when I decided to do cardio with him.
Start on Level 9 and run for a full 1/4 Mile
Up the speed to 10 and run till 1/2 Mile is completed.
Up again to 11 until 3/4 is done,
then up to 12 and sprint out the last of the mile!
Get ready to get gassed!

#1 - HR INTERVALS

My new favorite way of doing cardio lasting 30 minutes or more is a variation of intervals but using Heart Rate instead of Speed or Incline.
This can be performed on any piece of cardio.
Start by doing 1 minute at a warmup speed.
Then turn the speed or intensity up until your Heart Rate (HR) hits 140
This should take a minute or 2 to get you warmed up.
Drop back down to your rest speed and rest for 1 minute.
Next, put the intensity back up and keep it up until you hit 145.
1 minute Rest
150
1 Min rest
155
1 Min rest…..etc.
I keep going up until I hit 175.
By then you should be dripping sweat!
The last few round may take 2-3 minutes or more and the 1 minute rest to follow once you hit your mark is your incentive to really crank it up so that you can indeed take a rest.
I find this to be a really effective way of burning some serious calories!
BONUS - I can't wait to try this one!! ;)

Peach Protein Frittata Recipe

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of NOW Foods.

While reviewing some of the great NOW Foods protein powders and other supplements I received in the mail, I decided to get creative and put a recipe together for everyone to enjoy.
With the help of a good friend, the recipe came out amazing!

I absolutely love this dish and would eat it every day!!
Try it out and let me know what you think!

For this recipe I used a pea protein instead of the traditional whey you see more commonly.
Peas have no major allergens and are great for post-workout nutrition for athletes who may have difficulty supplementing with other types of protein. The NOW Sports pea protein I tried out tasted great and worked perfectly for us.

Here is the recipe:

•One carton or 4 cups of egg whites•3/4 C smashed slivered almonds•3 peaches•4 scoops of Now Sports Vanilla Toffee Pea protein powder•1/2 C Steel Cut oatmeal cooked for 2 min•1/2 tsp stevia•a little powdered vanilla

Lightly coat a pie dish with olive oil, crush almonds and arrange in a layer and put in oven under the broiler until toasted. Set oven temp to 350, arrange a layer of sliced peaches on top of the almonds and put back in the oven for 6 minutes.
Whisk all other ingredients and partially cooked oatmeal then slowly pour on top of baked peaches.
Cook for 40 minutes. Pull it out and put remaining peaches on top.
Turn the oven off and put back in for 10 more minutes.

Now doesn't that look awesome?!?!

BUSY and HUNGRY? Where to go / What to get

You did what you were supposed to do. You spend about 3 hours on Sunday cooking, weighing and packaging your food up for the upcoming week. You had it all laid out. You even went to bed early to start Monday morning with a kick ass cardio session. Everything was going great....then you remembered you had a blog post you had to write, you had emails to respond to, and you had a project for your boss that somehow slipped your memory last night when you were tearing the gym apart. You rush to get things done, pack your clothes, and even make it to the gym for 20 minutes of sprints. Then you get to work and open your SixPackBag to kill your hunger with some egg whites and oatmeal.....
DAMN! Forgot to pack my food!
It happens...
Now what?
Just call it a cheat day?
NO!

Here's where to find healthy food on the go:

Tue w/ Thomas #3 - ARE CARBS REALLY EVIL?

The thing about carbs is that they cause a change in your body's chemistry.

A spike in blood sugar levels from fast digesting carbs will normally cause in increase in insulin release. I say normally because with repetitions of these spikes, your body will become insulin resistant and not react as quickly. These releases of insulin cause your body to stop burning fat.
If your goal is fat loss this becomes a problem.

Now here's the other thing about carbs...
If you cut them out completely you're brain won't be able to function right and you'll feel lethargic and pretty out of it.
Your body will also adjust to being in a calorie deficit if you keep your calories too low for too long and your metabolism will drop. This is why you can't just starve yourself thin. I mean, you can if you want to do it the long, hard, unhealthy way, but a better strategy would be to employ something known as carb cycling.
This is a technique in which your carbs are kept very low for a 3 days to a week or 2 before allowing your body to have a day of higher carbs to refeed your glycogen stores. This allows you to burn fat much more effeciently without letting your body go into starvation mode, essentially tricking your body into keeping your metabolism reving.

There are a few popular strategies for this that depend on how disciplined you are.
I have found 3 days low / 1 day high and then repeating to be the easiest to follow.
Some are able to go a week or 2 before raising the carbs back up. This takes dedication, and for some like myself, impractical due to the nature of my workouts.

The bottom line is NO, carbs are not evil!

The key is to eat good whole food sources of low glycemic value carbs. Look for things such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole oats, and quinoa. These are the type that our body will burn slow and not cause a sudden spike in insulin release.

Here is a list I have personally compiled of carbs I deemed to be ok. You will notice some are actually faster digesting carbs, but they do have a place in my client programs. The list can give you a good guideline to bring to the grocery store.

Body Type / Macro Ratios - Some people are more sensitive to carbs (Endomorphs) and need to watch them more closely and some people need lots of carbs to function well (Ectomorphs). If you are an Endomorph, or someone who gain fat easily, your macro nutrient ratios will differ from that of an Ectomorph who will have a high carb tolerance.
Mesomorphs, or people who classify themselves as someone who have a naturally muscular build will typically find a ZONE based macro most beneficial (30% Protein , 30% Fat, 40% Carbs).
Endomorph - (35% Protein , 40% Fat, 25% Carbs)
Ectomorph - (30% Protein , 15% Fat , 55% Carbs)

These are guidelines that obviously would need to be adjusted based on the individual's goals and workout intensity/frequency)

Timing when you eat carbs is an important topic to address. The optimal time to eat your carb meals is after or around your workout. Your body is much better situated to use those carbs in the best way during that time.
If you are sensitive to carbs, (Endomorph) you are going to want to make sure your starchy carbs are limited to only around the time of your workout. The rest of the day you should only be eating veggies and lean proteins.

Mesomorphs can eat starchy carbs at breakfast and also around their workout, and Ectomorphs can get away with more carbs at every meal.

Also be aware that the higher your carb content for the day or meal, the lower your fat intake should be and vice versa. This is important to keep your body from storing fat.

Some of my fav low carb secret weapons!

Here is a great outline of the carb cycling strategy:
